The 12th century Abbaye de Maizières is one of the oldest buildings in Beaune. It stands near the church of Notre Dame in the centre of the medieval town, within the town walls. The Rue Maizières is a quiet, narrow, stone-setted street which traces the outer curve of the walls of the original Roman Castrum. It is three minutes gentle walk from the town market place and les Halles – the market hall where the annual Hospices de Beaune wine auctions are held every November. The apartment was fully renovated in 2001 creating a space that looks and feels like a house on three floors. The entrance off Rue Maizières, although quaint and historic, is unremarkable compared with many buildings in Beaune. The 500 year old stone spiral stairway which leads up to the front door on the second floor is remarkably little worn. Neither entrance nor stairway, however, gives any hint of the gem hidden behind the apartment door. |

Sitting
room) An oak
front door leads into a beautifully light and
spacious living room which has large oak beams and a stone wall with
delightful nuances of colour from honey to pink. Windows look out from
the front down to Rue Maizières and over the rooftops, and
to
the south over rooftops to the belfry of Notre Dame. The room is
divided into a sitting room and dining room by a light oak screen. The
sitting area has a polished stone floor and the dining room a beautiful
oak parquet. Free Wi-Fi (wireless internet) available |

| Two steps lead down into a well-lit, carefully designed and excellently equipped kitchen and small, adjoining larder. There is a separate toilet with washbasin. An oak staircase leads to the second level and an open airy landing which reaches to the full height of the roofspace. Off this landing are 2 double bedrooms and a bathroom. Windows overlook the roofs of Beaune to the church of Notre Dame and the Hotel Dieu to the south and give delightful views over the rooftops to the vineyards of the Cotes de Beaune to the north. A second stair leads to a mezzanine area on a third level. | |
|
(Below: Dining room) This apartment has been designed without skimping on finishes or fittings. There is generous purpose-built storage in light oak cupboards and shelving and there is, throughout, a sense of light and space helped by the simple white and cream décor. The apartment is centrally heated. There is a full mechanical ventilation system and a centralised vacuuming cleaning system. All windows are double-glazed and the bedroom windows have electric exterior shutters. |

Great attention has been given to the quality of lighting, use of space and the harmony of the solid, simple, medieval construction with modern materials. The result is a delightful and surprisingly contemporary living space concealed within the walls and under the roof of an ancient building.(Below: Bedroom 1) |

Parking: In the oldest part of Beaune, there is almost no private garaging or parking. Immediately outside the entrance to the apartment, there is pavement parking space for loading and unloading. In the adjacent streets, within a short walk, there is on-street and off-street parking which is free between 7 pm and 8 am, between 12.30 pm and 2 pm, and all day on public holidays and Sundays. At 3 minutes walk there is a large, free, public car park. The apartment also comes with a car parking permit for both on-street and covered off-street parking. |
